CHAPTER 10

OSCAR

A nervous-looking organizer was waiting as I strode off the platform after the panel on Mediumship in Children. No one had been happy with my comments about letting children develop their abilities naturally instead of subjecting them to training exercises or making them show off their ‘party tricks.’

Maybe I was a little bitter. Maybe I was the only one with common sense in that room.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Fellowes, but there’s someone been waiting to see you for a few hours now. He says it’s personal. Um”—she shrugged helplessly— “I offered to get his number, but I really think he needs to see you in person.”

It wouldn’t be the first time someone with a perceived emergency with the dead had approached me, and while I was annoyed about the panel, I also knew whoever this was wouldn’t be seeking me out unless they felt they were in desperate need, so I swallowed my urge to have a snit and refuse to see them and just go sulk. I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down a bit. “I’m sorry. Of course. Who is it? Did they say how they knew me?”

“Eddie Katz,” she whispered. “He says you know his dead wife.”

* * *

Eddie Katz was the saddest person I’d seen in a while. They were practically a wraith themselves: colorless, shapeless, and looking only inward. Unseeing as I approached with the convention runner who’d retrieved me from the panel. “Mr. Katz?” I asked as we drew close. “I understand you’ve been looking for me?”

His head snapped up and he offered me a thin, wavering smile. The runner left us for whatever the call on their radio was, Eddie Katz waiting until the door had swung closed behind them before speaking. “I understand you’re the one who spoke to the police about Becca and… and the others.” He swallowed hard on the last part, tears welling fast and thick. “I, um. I don’t know what to do here, what to say. For years, I’ve been sure Becca was murdered. I didn’t know it was an accident. I thought…” He closed his eyes. “I don’t suppose it matters now. The others…”

“Mr. Katz, may I ask who called you? This hasn’t been made public, as far as I know.” In fact, the police had brushed it off as a looney rambling, looking for attention. It hadn’t been the first time that had happened to me, but it still stung.

Katz worked his lower lip with his teeth for a moment before answering. “Merle Banning. He said he works for UnReality and, um, y’all wanted to do a séance.” His voice broke. He ducked his head to hide his face as a sob racked his body. “Please, Mr. Fellowes. I know it’s your job and all but please don’t do that. Becca… I didn’t know she wasn’t at rest. I want her to be at rest. The idea of her being summoned or, or…”

“Mr. Katz,” I said quietly, making him look up with red-rimmed eyes, piercing me with a fierce protectiveness that stung to see.
